This 12-week interdisciplinary fine arts syllabus connects Western classical music history with ongoing piano study, introductory transverse bamboo-flute practice, and conceptual woodwind notation study. Students explore composers, orchestral instrumentation, acoustics, and instrument design through guided reading, listening, practical activities, and analytical writing.

Educational Specifications

  • Format: Digital PDF course syllabus
  • Duration: 12 weeks across three units
  • Publisher: Dandelion Roots
  • Included: Three-unit study plan, suggested reading matches, parallel piano-study framework, bamboo-flute practice activities, conceptual Rubank study, three portfolio essay prompts, evaluation rubric, and instrument-care guidance

Three Integrated Study Units

  • Weeks 1–4: Baroque music, Bach and Handel, wind acoustics, piano counterpoint, introductory bamboo-flute posture and tone production, and conceptual treble-clef and rhythm study.
  • Weeks 5–8: Classical music, Haydn and Mozart, symphonic structure, piano articulation, embouchure coordination and airflow adjustments, and conceptual notation analysis.
  • Weeks 9–12: Romantic and Modern music, orchestral color, expressive piano interpretation, consolidated bamboo-flute practice, and conceptual key-signature and articulation study.

Separate Practical and Conceptual Woodwind Tracks

A six-hole, side-blown bamboo flute serves as a modern teaching instrument for posture, breath support, introductory tone production, and embouchure coordination. It also supports comparison with earlier keyless transverse instruments. It is not a replica of a Baroque traverso or a replacement for a keyed concert flute.

Rubank Elementary Method for Flute or Piccolo is used for conceptual reading, rhythm, notation, and future concert-flute fingering study. Students are not asked to execute its concert-flute fingerings on the bamboo instrument. Reading and lesson matches are suggestions to adapt to the editions used.

Academic Portfolio

  • Week 4: Piano and transverse-flute sound-production comparison, 500–750 words.
  • Week 8: Comparative woodwind listening and repertoire analysis, 500–750 words.
  • Week 12: Instrument evolution and Boehm's 1847 flute redesign, 750–1,000 words.

Companion Materials Needed

The course uses A Child's Introduction to the Orchestra (Revised Edition), Meet the Great Composers (Book 1), Children's Book of Music, and Rubank Elementary Method for Flute or Piccolo, along with access to suitable listening selections, a piano or keyboard, and a six-hole transverse bamboo flute. This listing is for the syllabus only; books, instruments, and audio equipment are not included. Consult the Classical Music Appreciation Bundle listing for the materials offered together.
