History of Communication
A hands-on history and language arts bundle exploring how people have recorded ideas and exchanged messages, from handwritten communication and stamped lettering to Morse code, manual typing, and digital writing.
Curriculum Included
Includes Dandelion Roots’ 10-week History of Written Communication curriculum with a parent and teacher implementation guide, five two-week modules, three differentiated assignment tiers, and a weekly course tracking log.
- Weeks 1–2: Quill and manual writing. Practice letter formation, passage copying, or reflective letter writing while exploring ink control and handwritten manuscript production.
- Weeks 3–4: Stamping and typography. Arrange and stamp letters in sections to investigate spacing, page layout, and the principles of movable type.
- Weeks 5–6: Morse code and long-distance communication. Encode written messages and practice short-and-long signal timing. The telegraph key is used unpowered for tactile timing practice; two handheld signaling lights support visual message exchange.
- Weeks 7–8: The manual typewriter. Explore paper loading, carriage movement, key linkages, and typed composition without digital editing.
- Weeks 9–10: Digital synthesis. Compare historical writing tools with a modern keyboard or touchscreen and compile written observations into a final portfolio.
Differentiated Learning
Tier 1 supports lower-elementary learners through letter formation, short writing tasks, and tactile exploration. Tier 2 supports upper-elementary and middle-school learners through summaries, layout exercises, and technical comparisons. Tier 3 supports high-school learners through analytical writing, historical critique, and mechanical research. Adult guidance allows families to adapt the work to individual readiness.
