The remarkable true story that inspired Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker — now in dyslexia-friendly font!

Step into the hidden world of the White House during one of the most turbulent periods in American history in Behind the Scenes by Elizabeth Keckley: the remarkable firsthand memoir of the woman who became confidante, dressmaker, and trusted friend to Mary Todd Lincoln.

Born into slavery and determined to forge her own path to freedom, Keckley rose through extraordinary talent and perseverance to become the premier dressmaker in Washington, D.C., serving the highest levels of society — including the Lincoln family during the Civil War years. In this intimate and deeply human account, she offers readers a rare glimpse behind the doors of the White House, revealing the personal triumphs, grief, scandals, and emotional struggles that shaped one of America’s most famous presidential families.

More than a historical memoir, Behind the Scenes is a powerful story of resilience, ambition, friendship, and survival. Keckley’s unique relationship with Mary Todd Lincoln would later inspire Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini, introducing modern readers to the extraordinary bond between these two women.

Perfect for readers of American history, Civil War history, presidential biographies, and historical fiction, Behind the Scenes remains one of the most compelling insider accounts ever written about life in Abraham Lincoln’s White House.
